A Swedish woman working for the United Nations in Pakistan has been sexually assaulted by her security guard.According to police, the incident took place in Islamabad.
Policeman Munir Ahmed told news agency DPA that the alleged sexual assault took place at the Swedish woman’s residence. The woman said in her statement, “The security guard entered my bedroom at night, he tried to shut my breath, causing me to faint and then he sexually assaulted me.Officer Mahimat Bhatti, who is investigating the case, says the security guard has escaped and every effort is being made to nab him”.According to Islamabad Police’s Special Investigation Unit for Sexual Offences (SSOIU) officers the Swedish woman started her job in January this year and is living in a posh area of Islamabad. The U.N. is concerned and the Swedish embassy in Islamabad has refused to comment. The allegation of sexual assault by a Swedish woman comes at a time when a Pakistani woman was sexually assaulted by a train crew weeks ago and there was a protest across Pakistan against the incident.Such incidents also indicate that incidents of sexual violence are on the rise in the country.Over the last four years, more than 14,000 women have been sexually assaulted in Pakistan, but sentences were awarded only in 3% of cases.Pakistan’s judicial and investigative system is extremely weak, which enables most of the accused to escape punishment.
