Baloch protests against Pak Army’s fencing on Gwadar farmlands

Ongoing efforts by Pak’s oppressive authority to erect fencing around parts of Gwadar city have sparked protest from local residents, leading to temporary suspension of the work. The Pak Army claims the fencing initiative is a security measure, however, it is an attempt to regulate the movement of citizens, occupy and exploit their resources as well as harass those who are dependent on the resources.

The coastal city is a key part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) where Army is planing to issue special entry cards or passes to residents. Earlier as well, under the guise of these dubious projects, checkpoints have been set up in every alley in Gwadar, allowing Pak establishments, including the Coast Guard, to enter homes and evict residents.

However, these moves have been met with resistance from segments of the local populace as this fencing and planned access regulations is infringements on their rights and freedom of movement within the city.

Footage from the area captured authorities erecting fencing around neighborhoods before the work was halted in the face of growing public backlash and protests by residents.

Gwadar is a key node of the multi-billion dollar CPEC infrastructure project aimed at connecting China to the Arabian Sea and Strait of Hormuz through Pakistan.

The much-hyped infrastructure projects that the Chinese promised at the cost of the Baloch community have fallen short; locals grapple with basics like clean water and electricity. Recent rains left residents submerged in 5 to 6 feet of water due to flooding, with no assistance from the district administration and provincial authorities.

Despite being in a disaster situation, the Pak Army failed to even provide basic necessities and help to the community. These projects have brought investment and economic opportunities only for the Army, and their negative impact is borne by the local populations.

Bomb attack on Pak police vehicle in Khuzdar, POB

In Khuzdar district of Pak-occupied-Balochistan on Monday as unknown armed men carried out a brazen attack on a Pak Forces Frontier Corps (FC) camp, followed by a bomb blast targeting a police vehicle that arrived at the scene.

Armed men launched an assault on the FC camp, triggering intense crossfire and explosions. As law enforcement personnel rushed to respond to the attack, the armed men struck again, detonating an explosive device that struck a police vehicle.

The bomb blast left several police officials injured, including CIA (Crime Investigation Agency) in-charge Maqbool Moosiani, who was among those traveling in the targeted vehicle.

After the Khuzdar incident, a large number of Pakistani forces and police personnel reached the site, cordoned off the area, and shifted the injured to the hospital.

While no group has claimed responsibility for the audacious assaults yet, they show how oppressed the Baloch community is by the brutal occupying Army to take up arms in protest, not only to protect themselves, but also to free their motherland.

Sindh High Court slams Pakistan for forcibly disappearing 11 persons

The Sindh High Court (SHC) has issued directives to Pak authorities to accelerate investigations and efforts for the recovery of 11 missing persons, emphasizing the need for compensation to be provided to their families. Among the missing individuals are two siblings.

During a division bench hearing on Monday (April 29), petitions for the recovery of the missing persons were heard, with lawyers highlighting instances of citizens being abducted or taken into custody from various areas and urging the court to intervene.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the provincial government and police, Justice Arshad Hussain Khan underscored the anguish experienced by the families of the missing persons, emphasizing the emotional toll of their prolonged absence.

Moreover, Justice Zulfiqar Ali Sangi criticized the lack of awareness among officers regarding court orders for recovery efforts and compensation payments, condemning the indifferent attitude displayed by authorities.

Highlighting instances of negligence, Sangi emphasized the urgency of prompt action for investigation and recovery of the missing persons. Additionally, the court expressed disappointment with the unpreparedness of lawyers of Pakistani establishment and Sindh government, noting their lack of clarity on the cases they represent.

Sindh government lawyers assured that the provincial government would compensate families of individuals confirmed as forcibly disappeared, while urging families yet to submit requests to the Interior Ministry to do so promptly.

In a decisive move, the court ordered authorities to ensure prompt compensation for the families of forcibly disappeared persons, emphasizing the critical need for justice and accountability in such cases.

Paki establishment deceives POGB fishermen, cling to flood relief packages

Several fish farmers in Pakistan occupied Gilgit-Baltistan (POGB) are facing dire financial losses following the devastating floods of 2022. Despite the occupying government promises of a relief package to aid those who suffered livelihood setbacks, the assistance remains elusive, leaving fishermen in a prolonged state of hardship.

Iqbal Hussain, one of the affected fishermen, reportedly recounts the significant losses incurred during the floods and expresses frustration over the puppet government’s failure to deliver on its commitments. Despite surveys and paperwork conducted by authorities in the aftermath of the disaster, no tangible relief measures have materialized to date.

Meanwhile, high-interest loans offered by banks are unaffordable for many, exacerbating their financial struggles. The delay in receiving relief packages not only affects fish farmers but also impacts their employees and businesses dependent on the fish industry.

While the puppet government boasts of initiatives such as the construction of cold stores and provision of fish feeds, nothing materialised. In fact, promised schemes for feed assistance have been revoked, adding to the fishermen’s woes.

Notably, the occupying government in POGB is working directly under the influence of Islamabad, with the responsibility towards people as a part-time duty. Any step taken for the betterment of people comes directly from Pakistan, making people vulnerable and highly dependent on imperial Pakistani establishment.

Pakistan intensifies media crackdown, targets over 200 journalists

A concerning trend has emerged in Pakistan, where media freedom and freedom of expression face significant challenges, according to a report titled ‘Erosion of Free Speech: The Silencing of Citizens, Political Parties and Media’ released by the Freedom Network ahead of World Press Freedom Day.

The annual report, covering the period from May 2023 to April 2024, highlights the increased Pak-driven intimidation and predatory actions by illegal elements and actors against journalists, bloggers, and dissenting voices in Pakistan. Over 200 journalists and bloggers were reportedly targeted through legal notices during this period, signaling a crackdown on media freedom.

The report underscores a concerning trend of reduced tolerance for online dissent, coupled with attacks and harassment against journalists and bloggers. Tragically, four journalists lost their lives during the review period, with documented cases of violations against media personnel totaling 104, including murders, assaults, injuries, kidnappings, threats, and legal proceedings.

“Over 70 legal notices were served to media practitioners. Many came consequent to a ‘joint investigation team’ of various government departments tasked with identifying persons for running a smear campaign against some judges; and that the judiciary was being used to target free expression aimed at others,” the report states.

The crackdown on journalists and bloggers coincided with a broader assault on free speech, as political workers also found themselves targeted, signaling a broader erosion of freedom of expression. This crackdown transpired against a backdrop of warnings and actions by high-ranking officials, exacerbating the atmosphere of intimidation.

“Political workers also came in the dragnet. All this transpired against a backdrop of warnings of actions by high officials, including top government functionaries, followed by regular targeting of online expression,” the report underlined.

The report also raises alarms over government attempts to pass the ‘E-Safety Bill and Personal Data Protection Bill’, which aim to regulate online content and establish authorities with powers to penalize social media users, further curtailing free speech and online expression.

“Adverse policy actions, such as the state’s intent to weaponize regulations of online content, particularly social media platforms, including journalistic and social expression, will not only institutionalize coercive censorship but also put other Pakistan’s rising digital economy in peril,” the report warned.

The report’s findings shed light on the deteriorating state of media freedom and freedom of expression in Pakistan, with journalists, bloggers, and dissenting voices facing increased legal harassment, intimidation, and violence, raising concerns among media watchdogs and human rights organizations.

Pakistan Army abducts Sindhi youths, tortures families in house raids

In a fresh case of brutality against the activists raising voice for the cause of missing persons, Pakistan intelligence agencies have abducted Sindhi youths from their houses. In a first incident, they raided the home of the late Razzaq Shar and forcibly abducted his son Bashir Shar on April 28.

They also assaulted the mother and sisters of Bashir who opposed the abduction. Explaining the ordeal, Bashir’s brother said that on August 16, 2020, he was also abducted along with Bashir and was alone released after over five months. Bashir, then 16-year-old minor, was implicated in terrorism cases and was incarcerated for over two and half years before being released on January 38, 2023. The only reason for their abduction was their acquaintance with the cause of missing persons. He said that he use to go to the camps for missing persons and participate in the protests.

He said that Bashir was not involved in activism and after his release, he left the city for work. Bashir recently returned for his brother’s marriage and was abducted by Pak intelligence.

Afghanistan: Deadly attack on Shia mosque worshippers in Herat claims seven lives

Unknown assailants have carried out a brutal attack on a Shia mosque in northwestern Afghanistan, resulting in the tragic loss of at least seven lives, including that of a child.

The targeted mosque, located in Guzara District of Herat Province, became the scene of horror as two armed men on a motorcycle fired while Shia Muslims were engaged in their prayers.

Reportedly, among the victims of this senseless act of violence is the mosque’s imam, adding to the grievous toll of casualties. Additionally, several others have been reported wounded in the attack.

The Afghan Taliban regime and Herat’s security officials have yet to issue any statements regarding the incident. Moreover, no individual or group has come forward to claim responsibility for the assault, leaving the motives behind the attack shrouded in mystery.

This is not the first instance of such violence targeting the Shia community in Afghanistan. A grim reminder comes from a similar attack in December, where seven people, including two Shia clerics and four women, fell victim to an assault targeting a rickshaw in Herat’s provincial capital.

Shia Muslims constitute a minority in Afghanistan, primarily comprising members of the Hazara community. Despite being the poorest ethnic group in the country, accounting for approximately 22 percent of the population, they have frequently faced persecution and violence. Extremist groups, including the Daesh Takfiri terrorist organization, have been implicated in large-scale kidnappings and killings targeting the Shia community across Afghanistan.

Last year, Afghanistan witnessed another devastating attack on a mosque in the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif, where a bombing orchestrated by Daesh claimed the lives of at least 31 worshippers and left over 80 others injured.
